Wandering Aengus

Description

Aengus is said to be the god of love in early Irish mythology, and he is part of the Tuatha De Danann.

In his poem "The Song of Wandering Aengus", William Buttler Yeats (my favourite poet of all time) uses the figure of the god to express the everlasting motif of unfulfilled love. Aengus catches a silver trout that later becomes a girl who vanishes into thin air. He falls in love and promises to find her. His determination not to give up on his quest, the conviction in his search for love is what I find so appealing in this poem. Its kinda like Shakespeare I guess; the way he put the words together is so haunting and magical and, yet, so real.

I tried to portrait Aengus' determination in his eyes, as he is looking forward to his goal: to find that glimmering girl and kiss her lips and take her hands, and pluck till time and time are done, the silver apples of the moon, the golden apples of the sun.
